Chapter - Follow them

"If this fax from Interpol is correct, they're taking him to some place like a stadium, full of people. They're planning to kill him there. Follow them. I'll call for backup."

Constable Roarch nodded into his radio phone. "OK, I follow them. You'll call for backup. Their car is a blue Chev sedan, plate NZWG ... "

"Chev sedan, blue, plate NZWG ..."

The door opened. Three men marched briskly out. No guns were in sight now, but Paul walked stiffly and the men beside and behind him each had a concealed hand pointed at him.

"Correct. They're coming out. Over and out."

Roarch slid deeper into the shadows, then ran for his car on the next street. He jumped in and started it, drove around the block to come out behind their car, and they were gone.

He sped quietly to the next corner and looked left and right. Blue car disappearing around a corner to the left. He sped quietly after them, turned the corner, and there was a blue Ford sedan parked at the sidewalk, with a little old lady getting out.

And another blue sedan two blocks ahead. He sped up a bit to follow one block behind. Then he crept close enough to check the plates. Three men in the back. NZWG ...

He dropped back and reported in. "Car 17."

"Go ahead, car 17."

"Following blue Chev sedan, plate NZWG ..., east on Victoria just north of Queen. Speed just under the limit. Possible kidnapping, with possible gang-style execution to follow. Request unmarked support to play tag."

"Do you know where he's going, car 17?"

"Robertson said likely a stadium full of people. He didn't say which one."

"Nothing on today at the local stadium, and you're heading away from it."

"Maybe the Sky Dome? Aren't the Blue Jays playing today?"

"I'll check, and I'll have car 20 meet you near the 401. The natural exit from there would be Book Street. Let me know if he goes somewhere else. Who's in charge of this investigation?"

"Uh. I was doing surveillance on Paul Burnthaas when three guys with guns picked him up. It's Robertson's case, but he's not senior enough if it's escalated from assault to kidnapping."

"Robertson and I are senior in the station right now, and I'm not available, so he's still in charge, and he has my complete confidence. I'll radio the guys out looking for whoever put that body in the river."

"They get anything yet?"

"Just statements from the kids that found it. But the body could have been in the river all night. Turns out the kids are friends of Robertson and the body was known to an informant of his. That guy gets around!"

"Yeah. What a co-incidence. How come Robertson isn't out there?"

"Before they knew any of this, his sergeant asked him politely to stay behind. Seems to get around too much."

"Uh, right. Kids see anything interesting?"

"Just a grey sedan leaving as some of them arrived. One of the kids has a thing about plates and recorded the number."

"Um, this is also Robertson's case, and grey is not far off blue. What if it's the same plate number?"

"Car 22 here."

"Go ahead car 22."

"The girl recorded the number on the car at the river as NZWG ... Is that the information you were looking for?"

"Car 17 here."

"Go ahead car 17."

"Thanks, car 22. That is the same plate number, I repeat, the same plate number, as the car I am following. That means the armed men who have Paul Burnthaas in their car are likely the same guys who were seen leaving the scene where the body was found in the river. They probably dumped it there."
