John, can you hear me?

Wha?

John? Can you hear me? Are you all right?

Uh hr yu.

John? Can you stand up? Darn, he's hurt bad. We'll have to carry him.

John felt himself lifted at both ends and sank beneath a wave of dizziness.

Can you hear me? Can you tell me your name and date of birth?

Uhhhnnn. M'head.

Drink this. You'll feel better. And I'll give you a shot for pain.

John fumbled to reach a cup he could hardly see, felt it pushed and tilted against his lips. He pulled his lips apart and drank the sweet liquid.

Well, John, you're a lot better than you were at 1 o'clock this morning. It's a good thing your supervisor found you and brought you to the hospital.

Hi, Constable Robertson. What happened?

Ha ha! That's my question! Well, what do you remember?

Well, I went to work last night. Started my shift at 10pm. I had a really bad headache. Then I went to do my rounds at 12 o'clock. I remember seeing someone on the monitors, near the main entrance, and they acted suspicious, loitering around the power pole up the street.

Yes, so you remember starting your rounds and you saw someone after you left the building, loitering near the entrance.

No, that's not it. I saw someone on the monitors, from the control room.

And then you left the building by the main entrance. What happened next?

I suppose I left. I don't remember.

Surely you weren't assaulted in the control room.

I don't suppose so. But the next thing I remember is my boss, Paul, asking if I was OK, and could I stand.

And where was that?

I don't know. I-I think it was outside. Voices sound different in the alley from in the control room.

He said he found you in the street, in front of the store.

OK, if you say so.

No, I don't say so. That's just what he said.

Well, I remember his voice echoed like we were in the alley, but it could have been the street.

So, what happened next?

They picked me up at both ends, but my feet a bit before my head, so my head was lower, and I felt more dizzy and passed out.

What happened next?

A doctor asking me questions and giving me a sip of something.

OK. Long blank there. What happened next?

Well, this morning they came in and that woke me up, and they asked me questions, and helped me to the washroom and I had breakfast and ...

OK, OK. So you remember seeing someone on the monitor, by the power pole. And you were about to leave on your rounds. Do you know what the time was exactly?

Yes. I was late starting my rounds, I was supposed to leave at 12:00 sharp, but it was 12:06 when I left.

Why were you late?

Well, I had a bad headache. I started my log entries late, that took a couple of minutes. Then I couldn't find my uniform cap. I hadn't set it down anywhere I could see.

Did you find it?

Yes.

Where was it?

Umm. On my head. I, uh, guess I never took it off when I arrived.
