Beaux-Arts Architects with
Influence in Ottawa
The architects who followed the methods
of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris took an academic approach
to architecture. They worked with a grand scale, proportion, symmetry,
axial layout, rational planning, exterior expression of interior
use, and adoption of an appropriate historical style. Usually,
but not always, a Greek or Roman Classical style was applied to
a modern structure, such as steel frame or reinforced concrete.
More information on the architects
will be found from this page, or from the building descriptions.
Where the firm is much more important than the individual architects,
it will have an entry. These are not intended as complete biographies.
Special significance to the Beaux-Arts and to Ottawa is indicated
by up to three stars. The deaths of many leading architects at
the peak of the Beaux-Arts success is highlighted in boldface.
